Recognition of Prior Learning
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is the formal acknowledgement of an individual’s current skills and knowledge – no matter how, when or where the learning and experience occurred. For example, working as a manager could assist you in obtaining RPL for a Certificate or Diploma in Management. Alternatively, working as a bricklayer could assist you in obtaining RPL towards a Certificate in Bricklaying.
RPL is an important assessment pathway, particularly for people who are considering undertaking study. The recognition gained may considerably reduce the study time and cost needed to successfully complete a nationally recognised qualification.
RPL is a process that should take place at the commencement of a person’s training, apprenticeship or traineeship and it can continue to take place throughout the training program. RPL assessment may include workplace observation, interviews or professional conversations, work samples and documented evidence.
If you have considered undertaking study or training, think first about your existing skills and knowledge. With RPL, you may be able to use those existing skills to considerably reduce the time and cost it takes to complete a qualification.
